Dual extraction is the gold-standard process of using two solvents – alcohol and water – to extract herbs. Rather than relying on a single method, we perform both a hot water decoction and an alcohol tincture for the same ingredients. The water extraction (often a simmering tea or decoction) pulls out water-soluble compounds, while the alcohol extraction (a long steep in ethanol) pulls out alcohol-soluble compounds.

Similarly, in botanicals like turmeric or ginger, alcohol draws out fat-soluble constituents (like curcuminoids in turmeric and pungent gingerols/shogaols in ginger) that water alone can’t fully obtain.
